February 22 - Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway
Today, ICARDA ( www.icarda.org ) made a vital re-deposit to The Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, Norway. The re-deposit is the first proof of The Seed Vault’s globally important mission: to secure a back-up copy of the world’s important plant genetic resources.
In 2015, ICARDA was the first gene bank in history to request the withdrawal of seeds from the Svalbard Vault due to the war in Syria. ICARDA’s unique collection in Aleppo was at risk.
The back-up seeds were then multiplied in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon and today Mr. Aly Abousabaa, Director General of ICARDA and Mrs. Lise Lykke Steffensen, Director of NordGen made the redeposit, witnessed by representatives of CropTrust who funded the operation.
